It wasn't often Luke smiled in satisfaction. As it was, it was only the shadow of a satisfied smile, but it was there.

Still hard to pull the wool over his eyes, oh yes. Those two idiots had thought they could pull one over on him and rob him of his shipment, but it had been child's play to track the line of events back to them. It had almost been too, too easy.

Shaking his head a little, he had to sigh. No professionalism. Just a pair of fools with more brains in their fists than their heads. But they had nearly gotten away with everything through sheer, dumb luck. Hard to believe they got as far as they did.

She would have had some pride in the chase. So few people did that any more. Still, a crisis averted was a job well done. As much as one could call such a little irritant a crisis. But it would certainly give him something to smile about when he met Matthew for tea, even if she was there.

Especially if she was there, in fact, because thinking about it, she must had known. How she must have amused herself, knowing such a simple affair nearly slipped right under his nose. It wouldn't have surprised him if she had been the one to give those goons the idea in the first place, just to see how fast he could work. Hah. Satisfied, he leaned back in his seat.

What...

Had that note been there a moment ago? My, my, he was getting inattentive. Curious, he flipped it open, setting his drink aside. From her? Empty pleasantries for securing the safety of his shipment. How strange. He frowned a little and read it over again. Again, twice more. No, it couldn't be that easy, if there was really some meaning behind it. A code that easy would be an insult.

Too, too easy, like... like those two crooks... no, surely not...

His eyes flicked restlessly back and forth over the paper, spelling out what he thought he saw. "Looks... like... I wi- DAMN her eyes!" he snarled, bolting to his feet and striding out of the building, making a beeline for a certain warehouse he'd only just secured an hour before. But it was already too late, and he knew it.

To be entirely fair, empty warehouses certainly gave excellent acoustics for frustrated roars, but that was unlikely to be any comfort.
So :iconfrothinglizard:'s Brogan and my Luke have a rivalry going on that I don't ship at ALL REALLY I DON'T.

... *makes irate little Luke stick-figures all over the margins* <3

Now I kinda want to know what was so special about that shipment and if it means anything to Brogan.
